PhoRTE® Voice Therapy: A “How To” Workshop for Speech-Language Pathologists

This 1-day in-person workshop on Phonation Resistance Training Exercises (PhoRTE®) voice therapy will utilize Socratic case-based learning, live demonstrations, and hands-on opportunities to train clinicians in the execution of PhoRTE® to treat vocal aging (i.e., presbyphonia). This PhoRTE® workshop involves 2 hours of pre-work to be completed before arrival at the in-person portion of the workshop. Pre-work will require participants to view a video that discusses who our aging patients are and provides an evidence-based examination of voice therapy for aging voice. PhoRTE® is a Level 1B voice therapy to treat presbyphonia with evidence from multiple published prospective, randomized, and controlled clinical trials. The PhoRTE® intervention is guided by principles of exercise physiology and motor learning with a strong emphasis on understanding the values of successful aging to promote communication, socialization, and vocation in our older adult population. This workshop offers ASHA CEUs, intermediate level, professional area (pending approval).

Following completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

1) Identify aspects of presbyphonia and the impact of aging on voice production.

2) Identify appropriate candidates for implementing PhoRTE® voice therapy.

3) Demonstrate ability to perform vocal intensity measures for establishing PhoRTE® vocal loudness and vocal effort targets.

4) Demonstrate the PhoRTE® intervention to achieve optimal outcomes in presbyphonia.
