Grant Funding

PhoRTE® Research Grants

We are excited to announce the availability of a research grant dedicated to advancing the study and application of Phonation Resistance Training Exercises (PhoRTE®). This grant aims to support innovative research that explores the effectiveness and benefits of PhoRTE® in rehabilitation of voice, motor speech, and swallowing disorders.

 

Purpose of the Grant

The primary goal of this grant is to foster cutting-edge research that will contribute to the evidence base of PhoRTE® and its impact on individuals with voice, motor speech, and swallowing disorders. We encourage proposals that investigate PhoRTE®, including but not limited to:

– Efficacy and/or effectiveness of PhoRTE® in different populations

– Long-term outcomes of the PhoRTE® intervention

– Comparison of PhoRTE® with other rehabilitation interventions

– Mechanisms underlying the benefits of PhoRTE®

– Psychosocial impact of PhoRTE®

 

Eligibility

Students, faculty, and clinicians affiliated with institutions governed by Institutional Review Boards are eligible to apply. We welcome applications from both experienced and early-career investigators who are passionate about advancing PhoRTE®.

Application Process

Interested applicants are required to submit a detailed 2-page single-spaced research proposal using 12 pt Times New Roman font, including the following components:

– Title, investigator names with affiliated institution, and contact information (email, phone)

– Research objectives and significance

– Methodology and experimental design

– Expected outcomes and potential impact

– 1-page maximum including budget and justification as well as timeline

– CVs of the principal investigator and key team members

– If student investigator, letter from faculty member expressing support and resources (human, space, equipment/supplies)

Evaluation Criteria

Applications will be evaluated based on scientific merit, feasibility, innovation, and potential impact on the field. A panel of experts will review the submissions.

Dr. Edie Hapner

CCC-SLP, F-ASHA

Dr Hapner, co-developer of PhoRTE Voice Therapy, has been a practicing clinician for over 40 years. She earned a PhD in speech and hearing science from Vanderbilt University in 2003. Dr Hapner was appointed the George W. Barber Jr Foundation Endowed Professor of Otolaryngology at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. She serves as the Co-Director of the UAB Voice Center and the Division Chief of Speech and Hearing in the Department of Otolaryngology at UAB. Dr Hapner is well known internationally for publications and presentations in care of the voice. She championed the voice centric Clinical Fellowship at Emory University in 2004 and has trained over 20 consecutive clinical fellows in voice and upper airway. Dr Hapner is actively involved with the American Speech Language and Hearing Association as a prior Board of Directors Vice President, SIG 3 Coordinating Committee member and Coordinator, and the Co-Chair of the ASHA Annual Convention 2020 and 2022.
